Roseburg Honors Robert Otis for 56 Years of Pathfinder Service

By Cara Otis

On October 11, 2025, the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church was filled with pride, applause, and a few joyful tears as the congregation gathered to honor Robert Otis for an astounding 56 years of service to the Pathfinder program. The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to a man whose dedication, kindness, and quiet strength have left a lasting imprint on generations of young people.

The sanctuary filled with the familiar sounds of Pathfinder tradition as the Roseburg Pathfinders—fully dressed in their Class-A uniforms—marched down the aisle. Leading the processional were Caleb Otis, boys' counselor and co-deputy director, and Tom Watson, Mt. Mazama district coordinator. The Pathfinders lined the stage, standing respectfully at ease as Robert Otis was called forward.

A Legacy of Leadership Without Yelling
Pastor Jeff Coleman welcomed Robert to the stage with warmth and gratitude, reflecting on Robert’s leadership style. He shared how, in other clubs, he had experienced directors who led by yelling—but that Robert was a breath of fresh air, leading instead with love, consistency, and a calm smile. He then presented Robert with a commemorative plaque in front of a beaming audience of family, friends, and Pathfinder members past and present.

In true Robert fashion, he took the microphone with humor, reminiscing about his own Pathfinder days and the way the program shaped his life. Laughter rippled across the crowd as he shared memories that spanned decades—his wit and wisdom proving just as timeless as his dedication.

Celebrating Behind-the-Scenes Heroes
Carolyn Otis, Robert’s devoted wife, was also honored during the ceremony with a bouquet of flowers and words of appreciation from Pastor Jeff. “Behind every successful director is a supportive spouse,” he noted. “And Carolyn has been just that—and more—for so many years.”

Honors and Highlights
Tom Watson was then invited to present the coveted 56-year pin, recognizing Robert’s service milestone. “Robert was serving in Pathfinders 11 years before I was even born,” Tom joked, drawing chuckles from the audience. He spoke passionately about the impact of Pathfinders in creating belonging and connection for kids in the church. “It’s more than just a club,” he said. “It’s a place where kids know they are seen, valued, and part of something meaningful.”

A Slideshow, A Song, and A Transition
A photo slideshow chronicling Robert’s many years in service played on the screen, accompanied by a live piano rendition of "Because He Lives," played by Melony Coleman, wife of Pastor Jeff. From grainy old photos to crisp, recent images, the journey told a powerful story of endurance, joy, and transformation.

Pastor Jeff returned to the stage and said, “While Robert remains active in the club, he has requested a transition in leadership. Earlier this year, Robert nominated his daughter-in-law, Cara Otis, to step into the role of director for the Roseburg Pathfinder Club.”

Meet the New Director: Cara Otis
He then introduced Cara as the new Roseburg Pathfinder Director. In a short interview format, Pastor Jeff spoke with Cara in front of the congregation. He asked, “When the club reopened after 2020, how many Pathfinders did you have?” Cara responded, “A whopping 8.” “How many did the club have back in the 1980s?” “Sixty-five.” And today? “Twenty-one Pathfinders!”—an answer that brought applause throughout the church.

Cara spoke about recent updates to the Pathfinder room: newly painted walls, a puzzle table, art and game spaces—all made possible through donations and volunteer help. She also highlighted her dedicated leadership team: Robert Otis: Drill instructor and co-deputy director (Roseburg Church). Carolyn Otis: Birthday celebrations and behind-the-scenes support (Roseburg Church). Michelle Kronner: Head Administrator (Roseburg Church). Tabitha Henson: Girls Counselor (TurningPoint). Caleb Otis: Boys Counselor (TurningPoint). Erin Watson: Uniform coordination and general support (TurningPoint). Melony Coleman: Overflow help and support (Roseburg Church). Jeff Coleman: Club’s beloved bus driver (Roseburg Church).

She closed by thanking the Roseburg Church for its ongoing support—volunteers, financial donations, and room supplies. “Thank you for your donations—whether it is monetary, items, or your time—because that’s what makes this club go ’round.”

The Torch Is Passed, But The Flame Burns On
Although the torch of directorship has been passed, Robert Otis made it clear: he’s not done yet. He remains deeply involved as the club’s drill instructor—mentoring, instructing, and shaping the next generation of leaders.

The Roseburg Pathfinder Club is already off to a dynamic start this year. They’ve completed the Poem Honor (thank you, Sandra Haynes) and the Bones, Muscles & Movement Honor (thank you, Wayne Perry).

Upcoming plans include: Endangered Species Honor & Field Trip – Led by Michelle Kronner. Lighthouse Honor & Field Trip – Led by Melony Coleman. Girls Pathfinder Weekend – Coordinated by Tabitha Henson, Shelly Perry, and the women pathfinder leadership. Annual Campouts & Events – With their trusted driver, Jeff Coleman, at the wheel!

As the program continues to grow under Cara’s leadership, one thing is certain: the seeds Robert Otis planted over five decades ago continue to flourish today.
