Soul Place PDX: A Safe Space for Young People

Soul Place PDX: A Safe Space for Young People

By Violeta Bilan

In the middle of Portland’s vibrant neighborhoods and bustling streets, a unique haven has emerged: Soul Place PDX. This dynamic community initiative sprang from the Slavic Adventist community in Portland, which over the past two years has welcomed many refugees fleeing the devastation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During this time, a vision emerged to establish a space where young adults from all walks of life could come together for inspiration, growth, and connection.

Nestled in the cozy confines of the Living Word Adventist Church in Oregon City, Soul Place PDX radiates warmth and creativity. Inside, the atmosphere buzzes with energy, drawing in a diverse mix of individuals from various cultural backgrounds.

Once a month, on a Saturday evening, the doors swing wide open, inviting all who seek refuge, camaraderie, and new experiences. The gatherings at Soul Place PDX offer a unique blend of contemporary music, engaging discussions, interactive games, and thought-provoking reflections.

Yet, Soul Place PDX is more than just a venue for worship; it’s a vibrant community hub where relationships flourish. Following the gatherings, the space transforms into a social oasis, where attendees mingle over food, forging connections, and deepening bonds.

Central to the ethos of Soul Place PDX is a commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering cultural integration. Leaders of the initiative, including pastors and youth leaders of the local Slavic Adventist churches, have made it their mission to honor and uplift the unique heritage of each participant, embracing traditions from Slavic roots to American customs and beyond.

As a fledgling project, the Soul Place PDX team harbors hope of seeing it blossom into a cherished fixture within the Portland community. It aims to be a sanctuary where individuals can not only find spiritual nourishment but also a sense of belonging, purpose, and hope in an ever-changing world.
