State Champions: PAA Boys Volleyball Makes History

State Champions: PAA Boys Volleyball Makes History

By Mechelle Peinado

We are so proud of our Cougars. So incredibly proud.

Late on Saturday night, May 30, the Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) Boys Varsity Volleyball team made history, winning the first-ever OSAA-sanctioned Boys Volleyball State Championship. The school's third-ever team state title across all sports, and its first in boys volleyball, in the very first year the sport was sanctioned by OSAA. Portland Adventist Academy did it first. No one can ever take that away.

The victory was thrilling. But the moment that will stay with us longest came right after the final point, when our players walked over to their opponents, put their arms around them, and prayed together on that gym floor. That is PAA. That is what we are here to build, not just champions on the court, but young people of character and faith who know that how you win matters just as much as winning.

One PAA parent said it beautifully:

"Portland Adventist Academy made history by winning the first-ever OSAA-sanctioned Boys Volleyball State Championship. The team competed with determination and heart throughout the season, but what stood out even more than the victory was the character they displayed after the final point. After being crowned state champions, the PAA players gathered around their opponents, embraced them, and prayed together. It was a powerful display of sportsmanship, humility, and Christ-centered leadership. Winning a state championship is a remarkable achievement, but honoring others in both victory and defeat reflects the true spirit of a champion. Congratulations to Portland Adventist Academy on a historic season and an inspiring example of what it means to compete with excellence and character."

We are also thrilled to share that Oliver Thompson was named OSAA Athlete of the WeekOliver led the Cougars to the inaugural OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 4A/3A/2A/1A Boys Volleyball State Championship, and was placed on 1st team All-Tournament in a 3-1 win over Central Christian.
