Stevenson Church Steps Up to Fill Needs

Stevenson Church Steps Up to Fill Needs

By Joseph Maier

One of our recent missions has been helping the low income with needs not usually provided by other organizations in the community.

We have been blessed by getting to know people in the area who have been houseless for several years while waiting for housing to open up. Typically, in our community, the place that ends up with vacancies does not include appliances with the rental units. That's where we come in.

It started with someone who was waking around town and needed a place to sit and relax. We offered the bench by the front door of the church building which is in shade most of the time. This led to conversations with her, learning about her struggles, and eventually an apartment opening up for her. The apartment needed both a refrigerator and stove. We quickly scoured Craigslist and found just what was needed for free.

Now, some time later, we've continued to help those in need locate things like appliances and furniture. We've travels as far as Hillsboro to pick up free, working, appliances and other furniture.

Our most recent request came from one of our baptismal candidates. Their refrigerator quit working. We found one in Vancouver and picked it up.

Here is a picture of Maria cleaning the fridge, getting it ready to be delivered.
