Teens Head to Bend for Rock Climbing Event

By Sabrina Jenani

My name is Sabrina, I am from the Pleasant Valley Pathfinder club. This past weekend I had the opportunity to help plan and lead out in the Teen Rock Climbing event which was held in Bend. I had never been rock climbing before, so I didn’t know what to expect. Additionally, this was my first event to help plan and I wasn’t sure what to expect or how hard it was going to be but with the mentoring and help of so many wonderful people we did the event with very little problems.

We started our weekend on Friday with some fun icebreaker games to get to know each other. So many people made new friends and it was wonderful to see so many fellow pathfinders bond, something that many of us were missing in past couple years. Sabbath morning was our first morning out at the rock-climbing site. We did so many fun activities and had short devotionals along the way based on our weekend theme: “Jesus Is My Rock”. While going through the different activities we had devotionals that would help us get over our fears and trust in God and it gave us time to share our personal stories on how Jesus has helped us through tough times in life. Some of our stations included prusik, the Leap of Faith, learning to belay and repel, learning different knots and how to set anchors, bouldering, and of course climbing. My personal favorite station was the Prusik because even though they are just tiny knots and it doesn’t feel like they can hold you up, you just have to lean back and have faith and they do, just like Jesus. If you have the faith and trust in Him, He can carry you through anything in life. I believe all our pathfinders learned similar lessons this weekend. On Sunday we did many different climbing routes. Some pathfinders did just a few, while other did as many as 14 climbs, but we all had tons of fun. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our pathfinders, and I hope to see more of you at future events!
